Lola
Lola, the Nanny
I had never heard of the National Borzoi Rescue Foundation but found myself on their webpage and was immediately taken by this gorgeous blonde bombshell named “Goldie”. I immediately applied to adopt her and fate took over. It was meant to be that my beautiful Lola joined our family in December of 2010.
Lola had the sweetest, kindest disposition. Everything about her was so easy. She LOVED to receive praise and wanted nothing more than to please me and I wanted nothing more than to show her, every day, how much I loved her.
Lola loved to practice obedience with me. Her favorite exercise was to sit, stay, front then around. I would ask her to sit, stay, then walk across the yard and say “front”. Lola would come flying over to me as fast as she could and just like a quarter horse with a sliding stop, she would plant her little bottom on the ground right in front of me. She would look up at me, smiling from ear to ear… just waiting for the next word “around”. She would jump up and run behind me and sit next to me in heel position and just smile, looking up at me just waiting… it was almost time… then she would hear “okay” which meant the exercise was over and she would jump up and I would shower her with praise, hugs and kisses. That was all she ever wanted from me and that “look”, smiling from ear to ear, enjoying every moment, was all I ever wanted from her.
It wasn’t until little 10 week old borzoi puppy ZsaZsa came to live with us in 2013 that I realized Lola had a very special gift. As soon as Lola met baby ZsaZsa, Lola immediately took over as the Nanny. ZsaZsa would sleep on the same bed with Lola and Lola would show her the ropes. Lola very patiently put up with all of Zsa Zsa’s puppy antics as she climbed all over her and chewed on her… my sweet, beautiful, patient Lola.
We adopted Winston in February 2017. Winston was such a worried fella and sweet Lola once again took over as the Nanny. I don’t know how the dogs knew she was the Nanny but they just gravitated to her. Lola and Winston would sleep together on the same dog bed. You could just hear the conversation between them as Lola would tell Winston “I was once in your shoes, brand new to Mom’s home, I promise, you’ll be safe and feel loved and cared for”. I remember laying down with Lola and Winston came over and dog piled on the top of me… I guess I was in his spot😊
In April 2018, Lola was diagnosed with a hemangiosarcoma of the heart. We had to say goodbye to our very special Nanny. Our hearts will never be the same. We miss her every single day. Rest in Peace our beautiful, sweet angel, until we meet again to resume our obedience dance.
We lost our beautiful ZsaZsa at 12 years of age this summer. As devastated as we are, our hearts are comforted to know that Nanny Lola was waiting for her to once again, show her the ropes. I will bring your little hedgehogs with me when we meet again my sweet angel ZsaZsa.
Thank you National Borzoi Rescue Foundation for giving me the privilege of spending my life with this most precious soul, our beautiful nanny, Lola. Tamara Cantwell
